I had mastectomies and 11 lymph nodes removed. Yes, my arm hurts and I believed it's due to nerve damage
I had limited movements due to my drains as well. Before I was discharged, my ot had me do some exercises and it did a lot. By the time I see my ot, I have good range of motion. Ot and exercises that they told me to do helps a lot. Watch out for lymphedema, if you notice your arm swelling, call your Dr asap so it can be treated right away. Hope you feel better soon. Take care.

Are you experiencing shoulder and arm pain after lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node removal?

Yes, shoulder and arm pain is a common experience after lumpectomy with lymph node removal. Many people report limited arm and shoulder movement, along with pain that can extend from the shoulder down to the wrist.

A MyBCTeam member shared: "It has been five days since my lumpectomy and lymph nodes biopsy. Overall, I am feeling good, but I have soreness and numbness at the lymph node incision."

The pain you're experiencing may be related to several factors:

- Nerve healing after surgery, which can cause shooting pains or discomfort
- Limited range of motion from the procedure
- Scar tissue development in the armpit area (axillary web syndrome)
- Muscle compensation patterns affecting your shoulder blade movement Recovery typically improves within a few weeks, though some people experience pain for longer periods. Physical therapy can be particularly helpful for regaining strength and flexibility while avoiding overuse that could worsen symptoms.

Your doctor may recommend specific exercises to help you regain movement in your arm and shoulder joint. It's important to avoid intense exercise, weight lifting, and strenuous tasks until you get clearance from your healthcare team.

If your pain persists or worsens, contact your doctor to rule out complications and discuss pain management options.

Wishing you all the best as you look for the cause of the pain, and a way to get relief. Since you had shoulder problems before- have you ever had physical therapy? Perhaps that might be a route to consider to work on that range of motion, etc. Hope you start feeling better soon! Hugs!

It’s been 5 months since I had a single mastectomy with seven lymph nodes removed on my right side. I do not necessarily feel stiffness in my chest, but I do have severe pain at times in the top of my shoulder with certain movements and positions. I had some mild shoulder issues prior to surgery, but it is so much worse now. I’m not sure of the positioning of my arm during surgery, but I can’t help but think that was part of it. Limited range of motion, pain when reaching up or out to the side, or across to my left side. It’s difficult to put deodorant on the opposite side or wipe myself (TMI!), and nearly impossible to get my bra fastened. I know, I could fasten it in the front, but I’m stubborn and think I need to be able to stretch that way.
After 13 PT sessions, it seems to be worse instead of better. X-rays show only mild arthritis.🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m sure there’s more to it than that. I’m in the process of trying to get further imaging.
