hi, all I can do is share some of what I have heard from doctors, and may vary in their opinions. some doctors believe that you get a better outcome with tissue expanders, then they are doctors that believe if you put tissue expanders in that when you fill them, and you’ve had nipples sparing surgery that your nipples will tend to start to move off center and outward, some of course will have greater movement of their nipple direction than others. I will share with you, my nipples because of the expanders did the very thing that I’m sharing… My nipples because of tissue expander moved off center, not towards my sternum, but outward toward my arms.
I would need to make this a very long post if I shared my whole journey, including a reoccurrence of cancer., so I’m going to say I had some problems with nipples sparing surgery and doctors attempting to try to get them centered , they did these surgeries as I had a reoccurrence with radiation, imessed up my reconstruction, which gave the doctors a chance to try to re-center my nipples… But unfortunately, and eventually I ended up with no nipples.
also, some doctors believe having implants right after mastectomy will keep you out of another surgery, this may be the case for some people and may not be for others, depending how your reconstruction comes along.
The women that I know personally, including myself, have not made it through the reconstruction with one surgery with immediate reconstruction with implants… And women that have had expanders first and then implants these women have not always made it through with two surgeries…
If I had to do it over again for myself personally, I probably would have not used tissue expanders because of what a surgeon recently told me about tissue expanders and the possibility of nipples going off center due to the slow expansion of stretch, stretching the skin with tissue founders. I hope this has made some sense. I’ve had some difficulty trying to put this in words. But it is a personal decision with your doctor, and I think there are other variables that go into what maybe your doctor is wanting to choose for your path to be. I did this post with dictation.
