Is radiation necessary after completing chemotherapy?
Whether radiation is necessary after chemo depends on your specific situation and type of surgery. It's not always required, but it's commonly recommended in certain cases.
Radiation is most often used after a lumpectomy to destroy any remaining cancer cells and prevent recurrence. This combination has proven very effective, with breast cancer recurring in less than 5 percent of people 10 years after surgery and radiation.
You may also need radiation after a mastectomy if:
- Your tumor was large
- Cancer cells were found in other areas of the breast
- Cancer was found in the skin
- Cancer cells were found in the lymph nodes
Some people receive chemotherapy before surgery, and if that's your case, you might still be a candidate for radiation therapy afterward.
The decision really comes down to your individual diagnosis and treatment plan. Your oncology team will consider factors like tumor size, location, and whether cancer has spread to help determine if radiation is right for you.

What type of BC did you have and what stage?
Was your age a consideration too?

I had lumpectomy and 4 identified nodes involved. Surgeon removed the 4 plus 1 next to them. Extra node showed nothing and the other four had very few cancer cells after chemo. Based on recurrence stats for my type of cancer and my next part of treatment I am opting out of radiation. My team understands my thought process and are being very supportive. You have to do what you think is best for you.
Stay strong and positive!
