While it's true that some people tolerate aromatase inhibitors well without major side effects, the research shows that side effects are actually quite common. Studies found that more than half of people taking these medications experienced joint pain, and about 48 percent of those on hormone therapy reported muscle and joint pain.
However, everyone's experience is different. Some people do have minimal or no side effects, while others find the symptoms challenging enough to consider stopping treatment early. In fact, about 20 percent of people stopped using aromatase inhibitors because of severe joint pain.
The most commonly reported side effects include:
* Joint and muscle pain (often affecting hands, knees, back, hips, and shoulders)
* Bone density changes
* Hot flashes
* Fatigue
