When can you start working out with saline implants after mastectomy?

After a mastectomy with breast reconstruction, you'll have physical limitations initially. You won't be able to lift heavy objects right away, and your surgeon may ask you to wait a few months before lifting weights again. Following their instructions is critical for a full recovery.

Once you have approval from your doctor, you can gradually work your way up from lighter to heavier weights. It's important to regain strength and range of motion, especially in your arm and shoulder. Safe exercises after your mastectomy include:

* Shoulder rolls
* Bending and extending your arm at the elbow
* Wall walks with your fingers
* Gentle elbow movements behind your head

These exercises can be done two or three times a day with five to 10 repetitions. A physical therapist can help you learn proper form and create a plan tailored to your recovery.

Swimming is also an excellent low-impact, full-body workout option once your incision sites have completely healed, which typically takes at least three weeks. Important note: If you still have drainage tubes after reconstruction, do not raise your arms above your shoulders. You can adjust exercises to avoid raising your arms too high based on your specific type of surgery.

Always consult with your surgeon before starting any exercise routine to ensure you're healing properly and ready for physical activity.
