What are some common hormonal suppression medications prescribed to postmenopausal breast cancer patients?
For postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors are the most commonly prescribed hormonal therapy medications. These drugs work by blocking an enzyme called aromatase, which reduces estrogen production in the body.
The three main aromatase inhibitors include:
- Anastrozole (Arimidex)
- Exemestane (Aromasin)
- Letrozole (Femara)
These medications are typically taken daily for five to ten years after surgery to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. They're particularly effective for postmenopausal women because the ovaries are no longer producing high levels of estrogen.
Other hormonal therapy options that may be prescribed include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) like tamoxifen, which blocks estrogen from attaching to cancer cells, and selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) like fulvestrant (Faslodex), which blocks and breaks down estrogen receptors.
Your oncologist will determine which medication is best for you based on your specific breast cancer characteristics, overall health, and bone density. These treatments can cause side effects, so it's important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare team.

Hi BB2, I’ve been thinking about you and hope your recovery is going well! I took Anastrozole for five years ten years ago, and have been on Letrozole for about 1.5 years currently. I’d been through menopause prior to Anastrozole, and have had no additional side effects from either med.
Take care! ❤️
