Cording (axillary web syndrome) is a common side effect after breast cancer surgery that causes pain and tightness, particularly when raising your arm. It can feel like a tight strap or cord running from your armpit down your arm, sometimes extending to your wrist and thumb. You may even be able to see it as a web-like tissue beneath your skin.
Common symptoms include:
• Pain in the underarm area
• Limited range of motion
• Difficulty lifting arm above shoulders
• Heaviness or numbness in the arm
• Visible cord-like tissue under the skin Cording typically develops days to months after breast surgery, especially after lymph node removal. While it can be uncomfortable, physical therapy is an effective treatment. The sooner you start treatment, the better the outcomes.
Risk factors that may increase your chances of developing cording include:
• Lower BMI
• Younger age
• Higher number of lymph nodes removed
• More extensive breast surgery
• Having undergone chemotherapy or radiation
