If you had breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy), you'll need mammograms every 6 to 12 months on both the treated and untreated breast. If you had a single mastectomy, you'll only need mammograms on your remaining breast. For early-stage breast cancer patients (tumor less than 5cm and fewer than 4 lymph nodes involved), after one year you may have the option to transfer follow-up care from your oncologist to your primary care provider. Most people will have annual physical exams after the first five years.

Note that routine scans (besides mammograms) are generally not recommended for follow-up care after initial treatment for stages 1, 2, and 3. However, if you have stage 4 breast cancer, scans may be used to monitor your treatment response.
