And women with heart or lung issues, radiation can cause really bad problems. There are many women over 70 who are healthy but overall health might not make a big difference. I was always told I looked 15 years younger than my age but my organs are still as old as my real age. Heart rate, blood pressure, general weakening of the heart, lung issues like COPD or asthma or from upper respiratory infections through our lifetimes. Blood circulation also suffers, vascular problems as we age. It takes longer to heal and there is more of a chance of complications from chemo and radiation.

I am 77 and newly diagnosed 1st time (Her2+ stage 3). I have been doing mega research on age factor. Unfortunately, there are very few studies for BC in women over 70. What I have found so far is what Barbara has stated... therapies are generally the same, but may be issues with chemo and radiation. Surgery may also be impacted, as in younger women a mastectomy may be easier to do prior to therapy, whereas us older gals may do better with neoadjuvant therapy prior to surgery, especially with larger tumor and/or lymph node involvement. Also, your general health may impact treatment options. We definitely have additional challenges to face due to the age factor. I personally am dealing with a difficult decision. I will be receiving neoadjuvant therapy prior to surgery; chemo or no chemo???? I have an appt. with my oncologist tomorrow. Supposed to start therapy by next week. Have so many questions regarding benefits of chemo to reach PcR vs the adverse effects to my body and immune system, which could potentially outweigh the benefits?? I never heard of age being a factor what kind of surgery is done. I have read age can be a factor with radiation. Probably due to the older we are the more health issues we already have and radiation and chemo can cause bad reactions/damage to someone who is older.

Also, I did have lymph nodes removed at 76. My cancer was Invasive so the surgeon had to find out if it was in the lymph nodes too. Maybe your cancer this go round was not Invasive and lymph node removal wasn't necessary.

Please ask questions until you're satisfied that you understand everything and you understand the reasons for treatment decisions.

I am somewhat confused that there is less concern because of my age? Does the cancer grow and spread slower or it just doesn’t matter as much?
