I’m almost 47 and am considering having my ovaries removed and also take an aromatase inhibitor. I’m done having children. I’m seriously considering this and I meet with my gynecologist in a couple weeks to discuss…any thoughts? Experiences?
@A MyBCTeam Member thank you; my doctor wants me to take Lupron injections or have my ovaries removed. I’m leaning towards the surgery. I’m done with my ovaries and it’s one less medication I’d have to inject in my body…make sense? Then after, yes…I’d take an AI. Preliminarily hormone levels drawn, showed I’m post menopausal probably from chemo. But, given my age; I’m think the surgery is the way to go..just in case.
Hi Jessica, I already went through menopause but the pros of getting ovaries removed you wouldn't have to take tamoxifen and could take an AI instead. At 47 you shouldn't have too many years to go until you go through menopause. Side effects of tamoxifen and the AI's are similar and basically the same as going through menopause hot flashes, night sweats, joint pain, vaginal dryness but once you get through menopause then you would be put on AI . I guess the answer for you would be if you are having a hard time on tamoxifen then maybe getting ovaries removed would be worth it.
@A MyBCTeam Member yes, my oncologist prefers lupron over tamoxofin. I can either get monthly or weekly injections. I think I’ve made up my mind though. I’m going to get my ovaries removed. Thanks for your Input! ❤️
I had them removed and it’s no big deal if it’s done via laparoscopy. Turns out there were some precancerous lesions on them so good thing we did that. It’s really an easy surgery for recovery and you just have tiny incisions in 4 places that you barely see. Definitely worth doing to avoid future problems and especially if you can cut out a medication.
I had my ovaries removed as well because at the time it was believed that
it was the best thing to do if BC was an issue in your family history. No
regrets.
