Lost most of my hair during chemo but the hair that didn’t fall out turned gray. The new hair growth I have is coming in dark like what I had before. My question is will the gray hair eventually start coming in dark as well? I know chemo can mess with hair color but as my hair grows out shouldn’t the roots of the gray hair start coming in dark too and once it gets long enough I could just cut the gray off? Hopefully that makes sense!
Chemotherapy can indeed affect hair color, texture, and thickness. Eight months after chemo my hair is still only 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, wavy and somewhat curly as opposed to the very straight short hair I had prior to treatment. The color that it came back was what I called "Brillo pad" salt and pepper gray that just was not me at all. I am 69 after all, so I pretty much expected it to come in gray, but to me it was not a pretty gray at all. Previously my true hair color was a light to medium brown which I had been highlighting to blonde for over 30 years. Last week I could stand the unflattering gray no longer so I went to my hairdresser for help. She was able to bring my hair back to the brownish color and then used the cap method to pull lots of hair through to highlight it with blonde. I was so happy when I left the salon feeling more like "me" than I had in 7 months. My hair is still too short for my liking, but at least the color is back! Best of luck in whatever you decide to do Melissa836 -but when you get to at least 6 mos after chemo, my advice is do whatever makes you feel the most like "you"!
My hair did the vert same thing! Now very curly!
