Bilateral mastectomy, tissue expanders, stage1A, her2+, need to have chemo. I have an infection (cellulitis) on my left breast. Doc says the bacteria forms a film around the expander and is unlikely to clear up at this point. I’ve been on cipro for 12 days and had 7 days of daily IV antibiotic infusions. Need to decide if I have just the left removed or both. After recovery from that surgery, 12 weeks of chemo then start over with tissue expanders. Anyone deal with something similar?
I am hormone negative her2+, left mastectomy with immediate expanded placement. My incision opened up just before it was healed completely & I ended up with a staph infection on that side. Thankfully the infectious disease specialist reviewed the culture results & put me on a 14 day course of IV and oral antibiotics (I also saw wound care). When I had my outpatient surgery to swap out the original contaminated expander, the infection was 100% cleared and a new sterile expander was immediately placed. I just completed my 3rd expander fill.
