When a tumor is large, the oncologist may recommend chemo and/or radiation before surgery to reduce the size. If the cancer has metastasized, the surgeon may choose not to perform a mastectomy but instead, continue with regular scheduled chemo to maintain the reduced tumor size.

My tumor was large and fast growing. I’ve been told my cancer is aggressive. So we started with 20 chemo treatments in order to shrink it before the surgery. Chemotherapy worked well and the tumor decreased in size. My oncologist was thrilled with the results. They were able to do just a lumpectomy.

I had a different issue, that may relate. One of my tumors was so close to my pectoral muscle, that they were not sure if the tumor was in the pectoral muscle. Instead of possibly having to remove some of my muscle, I was given chemo before the mastectomy. The tumor actually disappeared in that area. I would think they would do that for your case too.
