Not exactly a pain med but I have been on Gabapentin for about 7 weeks now, it took 6 weeks for the pain receptors in my brain to stop sending signals to my breast nerves which were given me horrific burning, stabbing pains constantly. I still have discomfort in both breasts but its manageable. How will I know when I can be off Gabapentin ? Do women take this for years? I hate to find out the nerves haven't healed by themselves and it would take 6 weeks again until Gabapentin would stop it… read more
I have been on gabapentin since last year i develped neuropathy in both hand and so bad in my feet i could not stand it. I was told that you should not quit taking cold turkey hope this help.
@A MyBCTeam Member my doctor started me out on 100 milligrams twice a day which was nothing. That did nothing. Then she increased it to 300 milligrams twice a day and it took 3 weeks to work. I did read some people feel instant results but it could take a few weeks. In my case it did. The pain was a 10. The shooting, burning, stinging sensations are just about gone. Not really gone but Gabapentin is stopping the connection between brain and damaged nerves. I still have breast discomfort in both breast which I am not sure what it is from but right now pain is bearable since that nerve pain isn't felt.
Hi Barbara, I suffer from fibromyalgia and after the chemotherapy I also developed neuropathy in my hands and both feet. I have been on gabapentin 600 mg twice a day for years. I do not see stopping the medication any time soon. I am still having a lot of pain in my breast and it has been a year and a half since my lumpectomy. I wish I had better news for you but if you are still having pain. I don’t suggest stopping the medication. It really doesn’t have very many side effects. Other than tiredness. That goes away with time. I wish you the best. I will keep you in my prayers. Hope this helped. 🤗❤️
Thanks Marita. I can't see myself going off it either but I wish I didn't have to take it in the morning. Its actually the best 'sleep drug' I have ever taken. I take a daily nap and once I get those 2-3 hrs I am much better for around 5 hours until I have to take the night time dose. I am assuming nerve pain is never going away. 🥰
I began taking gabapentin in 2019 for nerve pain related to stroke. It really helped, especially when I started only taking it at night so it didn’t make me so tired in the daytime.
I weaned myself off it in 2022, just because I was trying to take as few meds as possible. Now since my breast cancer surgery in August, my oncologist put me back on it for nerve pain in my breast and sleep issues. It has helped a lot and I can see myself continuing for the foreseeable future.
