What Prompts PET Scan?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

My friend just found out she has breast cancer and her doctor immediately ordered a PET scan. Is there something in biopsy results that would indicate mestasis?

I had a PET after my lumpectomy and they found a positive node. It was ordered to see if there was additional cancer sites (thankfully, none).

Same here Barb. That is the normal protocol but hey if a PET scan is going to be ordered right up at the top this person might not have to go through 2 months of constant scans and tests .

I had mammogram, ultrasound, MRI then PET as I progressed thru first two months of diagnosis and surgery.

@A MyBCTeam Member I think that's my confusion. She got a biopsy and they immediately ordered a PET scan. Makes me wonder why they think there's spread.

once they know cancer has spread they want a PET scan to show where else in the body it may have spread to.
