Radiation Experience
I'm currently waiting to hear from a radiation oncologist. This is my second time with cancer, but I didn't get radiation the first time. How many treatments did you get ? Did you have any side effects ? Did you burn at all ? Just curious what's in store.
I just finished 4 weeks of treatment (20 sessions) on my right breast. I bought Miaderm and used three times a day, along with fresh aloe and CeraVe. I got a rash a few weeks on my chest above my breast, and closer to the end - redness, itchiness, soreness, and general discoloration. I’m two weeks out, and I still have some redness and it’s it a bit sore/sensitive, but things are feeling better! I was fatigued during treatment and after, but I gave myself grace never pushing it and resting more than usual, so it wasn’t as impactful as I thought. Wishing you the best of luck!
The number of treatments is calculated by a physicist, based on stage, grade, bio markers, etc. I had 25. I had redness, but fortunately I came out with intact skin. I did have increased fatigue. I was told if you had chemo, radiation can make you more tired.
Last radiation 4 years ago.
Good luck to you!
I had a double mastectomy - cancer in both breasts. Lymph nodes negative. I had tissue expanders placed at the time of the double mastectomy. Because of the dual cancer sites, I had full chest wall radiation, Side to side, it covered from underneath one arm over to underneath the other arm. Top to bottom, it covered underneath my ¨breasts¨ to the just below my collarbone. On the left side, they also radiated the lymph nodes at my neckline. My experience was completely normal - burning like a really bad sunburn (no blisters), then peeling/itching. The creams they provided really helped. Considerable fatigue, but I went everyday after work for 31 sessions (no weekends and no holidays). Towards the end, I Had some trouble getting comfortable enough to sleep well, so Dr prescribed pain meds. I only took them at night. Tylenol handled it during the day. I healed quickly after the last session. Probably because of the neckline lymph node radiation, I did get a sore throat after about 10 sessions. It hurt to swallow. THey provided a liquid medication to gargle and swallow that numbed my throat. What helped the most was my food choices during this time. Mashed potatoes, cold applesauce and yogurt. I chewed my food a lot to make it easier to swallow. I saw my radiation Oncologist Dr once a week for a brief talk and exam, but on a few occasions I voiced my concerns to the technicians because my Dr visit was not for a couple of days and the technicians brought him into the radiation room to talk with me and answer my questions. Communication is key.
Treatments vary with each person. Also, some get breast redness.
Did you have any fatigue ?
