My oncologist wants me to continue taking Tamoxifen. Are there additional health risks to taking Tamoxifen more than 5 years?
Hello! Hope you find yourself well. It will be 7 years July 2023, that I have been on Tamoxifen. So far I haven't had any issues with taking tamoxifen. I will be on tamoxifen for 10 years. Since Tamoxifen can cause uterine cancer my oncologist sends me for a trans-vaginal sonogram every six months to make sure all is good. Hope this helps.

I was on tamoxifen for seven years. I started noticing that I was having vision problems. I went to a retinologist who found crystals on the part of my eye that was responsible for the “fine tuning” of my vision. He recommended that I get off tamoxifen. He called my oncologist and she put me on arimidex for the remaining three years. I had no side effects. The crystals did not go away but did not get any worse. Recommend seeing an eye specialist if you notice any vision changes
I start with T on Feb. 15. I was told 10 years. I will take it unless it affects my joints and muscles. Chemo was brutal....radiation for me easy...just hope my hair returns as I noticed more loss after radiation.
Thank you! I am currently seeing a retinal specialist (already had an appointment in the upcoming week) I will mention this to him. My ob/gyn also checks for uterine thickening etc.
Thanks again!
There is a test called the BCI, breast cancer index. It tests the tumor from surgery to see if one would benefit from 5 more years. Maybe ask your doctor about it
