I have a BRACA2 mutation so my plan was bilateral mastectomies, but they could not fit me in for a few weeks (surgeons conferences, etc) and I didn't want to wait that long, so I had a lumpectomy. It was outpatient. However, there is always the possibility that your circumstances might require that you stay overnight so I would ask your surgeon about this frankly. The inframammary incision that was performed was barely noticeable and not painful. However, no one gave me a heads up that the axillary incision (for sentinel node biopsies), is in a very uncomfortable place in the underarm area. Also, I had a very large and painful "seroma" which is just a collection of fluid under the incision. I had it drained three times and it kept coming back. The incision was not healing well because the whole area was wet from the draining seroma. The pressure build up from the fluid was very painful. It has now completely resolved.
I am not trying to scare you! I just wished that someone had warned me about this. Also, my surgeon thought that I had more production of lymph that made the seroma particularly bad, so it is very possible that you will not experience this. But if you do, you are not alone, and having it drained does improve the pain.
I am now waiting for my mastectomies. I was told that they will leave in drains so the areas under the incisions will not accumulate fluid. Also, I am having expanders put in, so my reconstruction surgeon told me that he wanted me to stay just one night in the hospital.

I had a lumpectomy and a node biopsy but had to stay in the hospital overnight because i had no one to stay with me after surgery. I was discharged the next day.
