Have you been told to avoid sugar while on chemo or since diagnosis? Im getting a lot of advice to do so from non- medical people but wondered what the science says
I think avoiding too much sugar helps you feel better overall. I learned in my cancer group that sugar feeds cancer cells along with other terrible foods we eat. The most interesting thing I learned was how fast the rate of cancer went up in countries like Japan as soon as they started getting american fast food chains in their country.
My oncologist told me that there is no scientific evidence that sugar causes cancer, but there is evidence that cancer cells (that are already in us) feed off of sugar and that can cause it to grow and spread.
I've had some well-meaning people reach out to me about how sugar feeds cancerand I need to start eating Keto (high fat, no carb). My oncologist said to follow a low fat, well balanced diet. I'm following my dr's orders.
As to the "well-wishers" with their unsolicited advice ... I'm hoping that they all mean well. Some folks get so involved with "their way" of eating and doctoring that they actually believe that it's the only way. Just sluff it off ... ;-))
My Dr. never said anything about cutting back on sugars, but I have a sister, who thinks she's a Dr. always bring me articals about how sugar feeds the cancer. Ugh, I'm just tring to balance my healthly food intake right now.
