Has anyone else been told by their oncologist that they may have to continue to take letrozole after the five years is up? I was diagnosed with stage 1A estrogen positive progesterone positive breast cancer 2 1/2 years ago in my left breast. The tumor was 6 mm long grade 2, stage 1A diagnosis. I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy and they found stage 0 in the right breast. I had no lymph node involvement at all they were all completely clean which they determined having removed half of the… read more
You might talk to your oncologist and request a different inhibitor. I am the same as you and haven’t had any problems with Arimidix (sp).
I had chemo, radiation, herceptin x1 yr, tamoxifen x5 yrs, then was urged to start Arimidex. I wanted to go back to my normal life, as close to normal as I could get after everything so I didn't take it. I went 2 yrs without anything. Then they talked me into trying it. I'm 2 months in and I'm not enjoying it one bit. Joint pain, stomach issues, dizziness, worse chemo brain, insomnia even being on seoquel, headaches. Blahhhhhh!
I’ve actually had that conversation and he says I’m a conundrum. Because I’m in that area where statistically on paper I look like I should have a great prognosis of no reoccurrence he knows it’s not a magic pill. So he’s hedging his bets and considering putting me on a 10 year course. But like you I’m not going to take it for 10 years. In fact I’m pretty confident I’m stopping at five. I will be 62. My cousin who had a similar breast-cancer to me five years ago and lives in the United Kingdom has been taking no adjuvant therapy. Her consultant believes that the side effects and the possible ramifications of taking and aromatase inhibitor for five years for someone with her low scores is inviting more trouble she doesn’t need.
Hi Everyone -- This August will be four years of some type of pill. Started with Letrozole for about 3 years. The pain the first couple of months was so bad I could barely walk. I don't know if I just got used to it or if my body adjusted. I still had pain but it wasn't as bad (which isn't saying much). I have now been on Tamoxifen since last August. I still have pain, but it is different and I'm not quite sure how to explain it. I thought I was starting to go nuts but now think I am starting to put some pieces together. My "confusion" is off the charts as well as mood swings, swelling in my legs, weight gain and just overall lack of energy. I think I need to go back to the Onc.
I now the formulary version of letrozole called Femara. I could barely walk from the pain, muscle and joint stiffness that I experienced with letrozole. Maybe the formulary will help version will help? I was told 10 years as well for stage 2 her+ IDC grade 3 on 6/2015. 1 node removed.
Hugs too you.
