My port is painful and uncomfortable. I am thinking about removing it when I'm done with chemo but I will still have Herceptin every 3 weeks for the last 9 months. Has anyone else done this? How was it getting the Herceptin through an IV?
Hi @A MyBCTeam Member, I had my port removed after I finished my chemo. It was twisting and getting harder to access. I also had Herceptin for 6 more months and it wasn't really a problem. Just make sure you hydrate yourself very good so they can find your veins. I had no problem having the Herceptin in my veins at all, neither did my chemo buddy.
I cheated a little and put port cream on my "favorite spot" the nurses always went to. I also used it on my hand and wrist before my mastectomy, IV's in the hand hurt like crazy.

My port felt the same way as yours. I had them remove it when they did my lumpectomy. Chemo was done prior to that. I have been having Herceptin infusions since Feb. with no problems to my veins. I finish Herceptin in October. I was extremely uncomfortable with the port and could not wait for it to be removed.
My Herceptin was stopped at the 8th treatment because of my heart muscle. But I intended to get my port removed and finish by vein. There were no objections. I spoke to my Onc and more importantly, my chemo nurses because they are who had to do the work :)
I have nice big veins so they had no problem with that idea. Check with your Onc nurses.
@A MyBCTeam Member .. I should clarify that it doesn't hurt during treatment since I use a numbing cream. It just hurts during normal activities like sleeping, some movements and wearing clothes. And sometimes I just have stabbing pains there for no reason. I think I have thin skin on my chest because it really protrudes.
