Started the first of 30 radiation treatments today (5 days a week for 6 weeks). Feeling anxious and want to know what long/short term effects to expect. I'm being told that radiation will "only" expose 24% of my lungs and that I should not notice a difference in breathing or long term effects. Is this true?

Thank you for the helpful information. I have already met with my PT. I will definitely make sure I go back to her when I am done with radiation. Better to address these problems early before they become worse.

Other than a bone scan before chemo (which showed some degeneration to my lower back that they say is not cancer-related), my doctors discourage any type of scan when there are no symptoms. I'm relieved that I don't have to undergo the stress of having additional testing done. On the other hand, I am concerned that there may be something going on that I won't know about until it has progressed too far. I don't know what the answer is. For now, I choose to believe that everything is okay, until it's not!

I had a hard time getting my RO to even talk about possible side effects. He acted like radiation was a walk in the park. When I went to my Plastic Surgeon, he was the one who talked about all the side effects of RADs. I have a family history of heart disease and I can't get any of my doctors concerned enough to order extra tests. I guess I will just have to wait for physical symptoms to find out if there was damage.

Thank you for the info. Nerve wracking is an understatement. So glad everything has been okay for you. You are right about the cost/benefit analysis. I figure, if I am lucky enough to be around to experience these side effects, then the treatment must have worked!
