Doing 4 rounds of TC. Then I will be having daily blood draws for 2 weeks straight after my first round and then weekly bloods draws for the remaining 10weeks. Would you get a port or not?'
@A MyBCTeam Member I'm doing a trial for the bone marrow shot. So they need to monitor my blood counts as part of the trial. Plus I had lymph nodes removed on both sides.
My port was never used for blood draws only the chemo. But since I had 5 lymph nodes removed on the left side in cannot have blood drawn or blood pressure on that side.
I didn't have a port, and though I have very bad veins to being with with I had no issues and with anyone at the cancer center, it's the OTHER folks that I STILL have issues with.
I had a port and I would do it again. It made receiving chemo and blood drawing easy and painless for me. Good luck!
My oncologist gave me a prescription for a port cream. It is Lidocaine 2.5% and Prilocaine 2.5% This made my life so much better. Place a "gob" of it on your skin where the port is, place plastic wrap/Press n Seal over the cream at least 2 hours, 3 was better, before your port will be accessed. Hope this helps.
