I was looking for something "time released" to help with pain overnight and my doctor insisted on jumping to Oxycontin (though I already don't like taking the 5 mg oxy she gave me). I don't like jumping to narcotics like that but she said that was the "next step". The office checked with my insurance company and they turned it down saying they wouldn't pay for it because we hadn't already tried at least 3 of the following first - Embeda, Fentanyl Patches, Morphine Sulfate Controlled-Release… read more

My mom used Fentanyl patches when she had compression fractures. They worked really well and she was very functional at 82. She was on them about 6 months and weaned off them effortlessly under her MD's guidance.

As I heard somewhere: if you've made it this long in life without an addiction problem, you are unlikely to develop one now. Tolerance is different from addiction and the important thing is to make you comfy. You can't heal or fight cancer if all your thoughts are on pain.

NoI was prescribed oxicodone the first time I met up with my oncologist. Then I ended up in the ER (for a cancer related reason, not the pills). They gave me the same. It helped with my pain, but I was taking too many. So my oncologist switched me to fentanyl patches. It works for me!!! I like the patches better, less to remember to take. But I don't seem to have the side affects some of you are having. I'm doing well on it.

@A MyBCTeam Member - I asked about the medical marijuana but I'm not sure if my onc will want to prescribe it. Thing is, it's not covered by insurance so I don't know if I can afford to pay for it, My second opinion onc said if I'm really interested, they have a department up at MD Anderson that deals with it and he'll refer me there. Not sure what I want to do.

I think all meds are hard on the liver. In the hospital, they hooked me up with a pain block that was like Novacaine so less toxic on the liver. I have seen people with home pumps for pain for back pain. I know we have so many appointments we don't want another doc. In the next month I have chemo weekly, a Lymphedermia consult and probably lots of OT appts, an eye appt, an Endo Appt and my yearl physical with my PCP. I carry all my doctors business cards in my wallet, it is getting thicker and thicker.
