My last lab came back with my hemoglobin level low. The doctor said they keep an eye on it i go again next Thursday. I asked what i can be doing to improve it.. She suggested foods high in protein and iron.. Any comments or suggestions (liver not an option ewwwe). suggestions
*protien at every meal*
Yep

Cook in an iron pan (it's no myth-http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questio... )
((Hug))
I did eggs 2-3 every morning and a fruit smoothie with almond milk. Protein with every meal. Towards the end, I had one delayed chemo. A little elderly woman at chemo told me she never had a delay that next week. Asked her what she does.... Beets lots of them and drinking pinto bean juice. Yep.... I did it from that point on!!! Not one postponement since. Plugged my nose and chugged :) hugs
Hi Rhoda.... Sorry about that--I've run into it myself. Try clams, lsunflower seeds, nuts, beef, lamb, beans (pick a lentil, any lentil), whole grains, dark leafy greens (spinach), dark chocolate, and tofu. Anything that says iron-fortified is a good bet, too.
Our bodies have trouble absorbing the iron in plants, but eating your spinach with something that's got vitamin C in it will help. (And cooked spinach is better than raw, oddly, for iron.)
I ran into that issue too, in between a/c and taxol, ended up with a transfusion. Felt like a million bucks after that. Are you still going thru treatments? I finished in January and mine is still slow creeping up, they say, that's normal. Getting blood work next weekend, will be anxious to see numbers.
I asked my ONC about Vit C because it is in several of my B complex vitamins and my eye vitamins. He said it was fine as long as you don't do mega doses.
