Today my fingernails are tender. Those who who jave lost your nails, were they tender before you lost them?
Keep in mind, I am a former hairdresser. Nails and hair are my specialty. Secondarily, chemo is my specialty because I was on Methotrexate for my RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) before all this BC business and that is also a chemo drug.
When I first started MTX several years ago, my nails started to release from the nail bed. They also started growing lumpy as the poison started impacting their health. You'll notice the nail bed near your cuticle goes milky, no longer pink and healthy. And yes, tenderness.
Here are my tips:
1. Take Folic Acid. I take 800 mcg per day. This also has a side benefit of increasing white blood cells for us chemo patients.
2. Keep your nails a little shorter. I LOVE my nails and wear crazy polishes etc... and my nails have always been long. I now keep them about 1/4" or so long.
3. Stop using your nails to do things you used to. Give them a break :) Use gloves more too if you can.
4. Give yourself hand massages as often as possible. Use a good hand lotion and make sure you massage all the way out to the tips of your fingers. Pulling gently, rotating around the fingers, getting blood flow out to your fingertips.
Hope this helps!
Love to all <3
Mine are a little tender too. I still have them pretty long I was thinking maybe trimming them down a bit would help.
Mine were really tender especially my toe nails. Had some discoloration but still hanging on and tenderness is gone!
Needless to say I was pretty surprised!!! All through my journey didnt experience the side effects alot are having but in the long run, they are nails and will grow back!!!! Hopefully yours will be fine!!!
@A MyBCTeam Member I hope they don't fall off either. Mine are holding up pretty good, I just have the ridges in them.
