I live in California, and I did not get disability from the state. Luckily, I had purchased a private disability policy a few years ago. I got about 1/3 of my pay while I was out of work. So much better than not getting paid at all.

Part Two: Benefit Amounts for DI (http://www.edd.ca.gov/Disability/State_Disabili...)

For claims beginning on or after January 1, 2016, weekly benefits range from $50 to a maximum of $1,129. To qualify for the maximum weekly benefit amount ($1,129) an individual must earn at least $26,070.92 in a calendar quarter during the base period.

An individual’s weekly benefit amount is approximately 55 percent of their earnings up to the maximum weekly benefit amount. They may receive up to 52 weeks worth of DI benefits. The daily benefit amount is calculated by dividing an individual’s weekly benefit amount by seven. The maximum benefit amount is calculated by multiplying an individual’s weekly benefit amount by 52 or adding the total wages subject to SDI tax paid in an individual’s base period, whichever is less.

SDI will cover your payments for up to a year (52 weeks). If you believe you will be out of work longer then a year your employer will most likely have you file for Long Term Disability (LTD). Most LTD's are covered by your employer's insurance agency and will pay out a similar amount as your SDI.

Hope this helps.

I live in SoCal and went through the same process as @A MyBCTeam Member. Once you complete the SDI application online, they will contact your oncologist or whomever you listed as your PCP. EDD will start processing your application after your doctor submits his/her portion. Just a heads up, you will receive paper statements and emails from EDD, the emails are mostly automated but the paper statements is what you need to pay attention to. I got caught in a situation where I replied to an automated email asking me to do something where the paper statement told me to do something completely different which caused a mix up in my payment. It was eventually worked out but only after I called the EDD office and had to wait almost an hour to speak to a rep. If you come across anything you are unsure of, contact EDD right away. It's not worth making guesses.

Social Security is for disability for more than 12 months, SDI is thru Employment Development Department, usually more in payments since it is based on your earnings

I currently get SDI in California, it is based on your previous 12 months of earnings before filing for SDI, you get 3/4 of your earnings, it took approx. 2 weeks to get first payment, apply on line, once you apply you will be sent a debit card from Bank of America, your payments will be available to you every two weeks
