After doing a lot of research and talking with my surgeon I decided on a lumpectomy. I was stage one, nothing in the lymph nodes. Survival rate is the same recovery time is faster.

I had stage 3 right breast, I also had at least 2 other tumors in the right. Stage 1 in the left...no way I wanted any of it!!!

I had a double mastectomy because they also found cancer in both breast. I was like off they go!!!!

I echo what others have said - it's a very personal choice, and you need to trust that whatever decision you make is the right one. In my case I had Stage 0 DCIS, but it was very close to the chest wall on the left side. I didn't want the risks associated with radiation there, and honestly I just wanted to be done with everything so I had a BMX. I'd had so many call backs for mammograms in the past, and once I had an actual reason to worry I knew I'd make myself sick thinking about the possibility of a recurrence. With the BMX I didn't need any additional treatment - the surgery itself was the treatment.

I had 5 areas in my right breast with abnormalities, which would have been very difficult for lumpectomy. Secondly my mom initially had a lumpectomy 31 years ago but was always uncomfortable and after a mastectomy 10 months later cancer had grown and she died 6 months after that. Lastly, I did not want to go for 6 weeks radiation and 5 years of tamoxifen. Never regret my decision!
