A friend of mine was diagnosed with Stage 1 Grade 2 beast Cancer a year before me. She only had radiation because of cleat margins and now lymph node involvement. Her Oncotype score was low. She was put on Tamoxifen. Last month she was diagnosed last month with another Breast tumor at the same site. They also found Cancer in one lymph node. She is now recovering from a double mastectomy and is now scheduled for chemo. When she met with the team she asked how could someone with a very low… read more

I cut out dairy after reading T Colin Campbell's China Study. He describes how the casein from milk is a cancer causing agent (especially breast cancer.) Cheese has been the hardest thing to remove fully from my diet and I do have it occasionally as a treat. I never really liked yogurt so I do not miss that but I get probiotics from fermented foods like tempeh or sauerkraut.

I think cancer can do whatever the heck it wants. Reoccurrance statistics and prognosis are numbers and good guesses based on what usually happens. I should have never gotten breast cancer at all based on risk factors. But nothing is ever guaranteed and breast cancer is hard to predict. We cannot live the rest of our life worrying that it will come back. Life is short, as we know, and worrying does not prevent cancer. In fact it may do the opposite.

@breatcancermaven why no dairy? I've read that high fat dairy is bad, but non-fat is good. And a yogurt a day is great for the probiotics. In curious about your take.

I chose a BMX because I wanted to minimize (can't eliminate) the risk of another primary tumor in either the same breast or the healthy breast. I also didn't want reconstruction because it can make finding new tumors more difficult. I too was Grade 1, clean nodes, low Oncotype BUT when my breasts were lopped off and examined, they found a second, more aggressive tumor along with a huge area of DCIS in the cancerous breast, as well as micro-calcificaiotns in the "healthy" breast. My surgeon admitted that my choice was very wise.
It's been 1.5 years and I have no regrets.

Did she have a lumpectomy? It is common to have recurrences. Unless you have a bilateral breasts MRI which is sensitive to pick up pre-cancerous tumors. This is a clincher to have a bilateral mastectomy after pathology showed no clear margins on the tumor from the lumpectomy. The MRI show the lower half of my left breast with an abnormality and it turned out to be pre-cancerous. So needless to say if I stayed on the road of lumpectomy and radiation, I would have had a recurrence of breast cancer which would have been Stage 3 or 4 when it was detected.
