My feeling is that the more you forbid yourself something you crave, the more you crave it. I feel it is better to find something you can substitute that you like. Another idea is to buy something that is portion controlled. If you REALLY want some candy, visit Sees and buy 1/4 pound of one you like. That gets me over the craving. I also purchase juice bars and that serves as my substitute for ice cream. Brushing my teeth after dinner also helps!

Also, remember that sugar comes in many forms, not just glucose, but also fructose, sucrose etc. That's why I look at the whole carb content as well. I limit my sugars and avoid all sugar-free, artificially sweetened products.
I look for items sweetened with stevia or manitol, I just found some great manitol sweetened cookies made with spelt rather than wheat. I have so limited my wheat consumption that too much bread makes me feel bloated.
To complicate matters, my husband has been diagnosed as being pre-diabetic though he is physically active. Sadly, he loves potatoes and bananas, two very high carb, "white" foods as my onc puts it.
I try to serve as many colorful foods as possible - especially as they come into season now.

I look at the total carb content and the fiber. I have found restricting white foods has helped me loose weight and feel better. When I crave something sweet, I'll have a plain yoghurt with a teaspoon if home made jam, 2 pieces of good dark chocolate, a huge slice of watermellon or reasonable piece of some other fruit (not bananas).
It's been a bit if an adjustment but I've dropped a pant size so it's working.

I will eat dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao for that chocolate craving. And wen I crave ice cream I will make a shake with almond milk, cacao powder and banana. I also add another fruit or spinach and my powdered vitamin. Very tasty! Of course tastes better with non fat milk but that has sugar too. I don't know if I can live like this the rest of my life tho.
