I got mine about 1.5 years ago. I got used to it afte a couple of months. I can't even tell it's in my chest any more. I will have my port for over 2 years before it's removed. My oncologist said I can't have it removed until 1 year from my last date of treatment. Since I had herceptin for a year, the soonest it can be removed is over 2 years after it was placed. My oncologist said it's better keep the port in a little longer than to take it out & need to have it put back in again. She is not being negative, but you never know with cancer. I had inflammatory breast cancer & it was Her2 positive so I have high a 15-20% chance of recurrence.

I never got used to mine. I was finally able to have it removed two years after completion of treatment.

My mother gave me a pillow that was memory foam. Couldn't even notice the port after getting the pillow.

My port will never come out, I knew that going in. I've had my port a little over a year, and I am glad of it. No more IVs. Just a little numbing cream, and I never even feel the poke for access. After the incision was healed, I had no problems. Sometimes if my dog jumps up on me (which I discourage), she might hit it, and then I remember it's there.

It took awhile but not too bad a few weeks maybe- but to be honest, i dont remember - it did itch sometimes and was a little annoying because it was a bump there. I'd triy to wear tops that covered iit - which was fine in the winter months when i was wearing sweateres. Then after awhile just didn't care! My oncologist said generally, she wants her patients to leave it in 2 hrs after surgery and make sure all my tests were clear, and makes it easier to get bloodwork. But still after my chemo was done had to go and get it flushed every six weeks - I didn't haven't to that for the entire two years - as time went by the flushings got further apart. But itnwas usually timed around Checkups, sonthat wasn't so bad. So once my mammo and all that were clear i had it taken it out which was just last Oct. . So after having it two years I was so happy to finally have it out!
