I was released from the care of my oncologist on the condition that I have a full blood work-up. So at the doctor yesterday going over the results and he mentions the CA-125, that it's miniscule (his word) and not to be concerned. My number is 12, and the "range" is less than 21. To me, 12 isn't a miniscule number. It's more that half way!!! Should I be concerned? the ca-125 test measures a antigen that rises in the presence of ovarian cancer. There are other things that can make it tise too. The thing to watch for is if its low then spikes. mine was 8 then spiked up to 21 then they found a tumor in my fallopian tube
Also, I am on the anti-hormone therapy and take Femara. The numbers measure how well it is working. Early in the game, they make up markers so that they'll know what's going on should the number rise and fall.
It is not 100% percent reliable. In some cases of ovarian cancer it does not rise at all. Other things like ovarian cysts, menstruation can make it rise.
Well, my ob told me not to get one as they are not reliable indicators of ovarian cancer.
