I had my finger nails and toe nails all come away from my nail beds during my A/C chemo, that was very painful!! But ending up loosing all of my toe nails!! It's been a year and I still have one toe nail that hasn't grown back. Wanting to get a pedi and paint my toenails, but missing that one toenail puts a damper on things.
Your fingernails and toes will be brittle from treatment. If you exercise, walk alot or wear tight shoes it may result in damage to your toenails, especially the big toe. The result is it will turn black and eventually come off. After chemo your nails will strengthen again but some hormone therapies weaken nails (and bones) which is why your doctor will recommend a combination dosage of vitamin D and Calcium. Use Vaseline, Abolene or even Olive Oil or other vegetable oil on your nails to keep them moisturized. Ask your doctor or nutritionist about vitamins or supplements you can take, provided they do not interfere with your treatment.
I lost all of my toenails over a year ago after finishing chemo and only the pinky toe nails are coming back. I also lost both thumb nails and they grew back just fine. I too want a pedi, I'm going to Hawaii in two weeks!
When my toenails turned black- My oncologist sent me to a specialist for chemo patients(podiatrist)She told me it was most common and to rub Vicks Vapor rub on my toes each night (wear socks) and it help to the point where I didn't lose other toenails and the 4 that fell off -have already come back. Works! take care...
I lost 2 toenails, but they came back eventually ( it took a while). My fingernails did not come off but they were really really discolored ( almost black) so I kept them polished. They stayed that way for a good 2 to 3 months after I finished chemo. Now they are all just fine. No discoloration at all.
I didn't lose my toe nails they just got darker.
