My medical onc says there is no way of preventing recurrence. He basically said until you have symptoms, there is nothing you can do. He is going to do mammogram and maybe MRI. But I thought there might be something done in the way of blood markers and blood tests as well as checking hormone function, etc. I would appreciate hearing from all of you as to what kind of follow up you are receiving. I just finished radiation this week. My onc has ordered a bone scan for me tomorrow and then wants to… read more

Until I complained about fatigue they never tested my b12. When I persistently complained even a year later and on B12. Shots they decided to test for D levels. What if I never complained? How long would I have gone on with low levels which affect the immune system? On the other hand, if cancer could be detected with a simple blood test the whole population would be getting them. It's not that simple and yes, I have heard of lots of false positives. My friend with liver mets says her liver enzyme to this day still shows normal so even that is not an indicator.

I totally agree with your mom. I think they should do blood work and check for markers.

I'm told I have to go every three months for a couple of yrs then every six months. I guess they will do blood tests since I had a bilateral mastectomy. I'm not clear on what other tests they will do. I would like a PET scan at some point, but the doc said it wasn't necessary. Just want to SEE what is going on.

I am 2 yrs in remission and I go to my hematologist and radiation oncologist every quarter. I usually have bloodwork done (they look for tumor markers, etc.)the day before my doctor appointments. I have a mammogram, Pet Scan and bone scan (for the osteopena)once a year. I am also on Femara and they check on the hormone function from the bloodwork.

I go to my medical oncologist every 6 months. Prior to that appointment, I have blood work done (6 months). On the other 6 month schedule, I go to my radiation oncologist, but I don't have bloodwork at that time. My mammograms are scheduled every 6 months. and usually co-incide with the radiation oncologists appointments. I haven't had a bone scan, maybe I need one? I might ask that question at the next appointment. My next appointment, the bloodwork will be testing hormone function to see if I stay on Tamoxifen or move to another drug. I'm only 1 year past surgery, so I'm not sure what is normal... I think if I had to go more frequently, I would be more scared about what aren't they telling me.
Hugs* to you!
