Members shared many clear signs that it may be time to find a new doctor, including being dismissed, having concerns brushed off, poor communication, and excessive wait times. Several members described personal experiences switching oncologists multiple times before finding one who truly listened, with one member now on their fourth oncologist and feeling grateful for the right fit. A recurring theme was that if you are already questioning your doctor, that feeling of doubt is a strong sign to seek a second opinion or a new care team, because trusting your gut matters.

If they dismiss you and your concerns. If they don't listen to you. If they are prejudiced against you for race, religion, sexual orientation, physical appearance like tattoos/piercings/hair styles & colors, etc. If they don't answer your questions. If they don't take the time to review your file if they don't remember the particulars about you and your health situations. If they pooh pooh you away. If they don't order tests that you require. If they get irritated about the fact that you research your cancer, treatments, drugs, etc. If they lie to you. If they yell at you. If they make mistakes in your care. If their mistakes endanger your longevity. If their mistakes endanger your life. If you don't trust them. If they always palm you off on the nurse or PA when a doctor is required. If they violate your rights as a disabled person. If they violate your ADA rights if you require the use of a service dog.

I've been through all of the above and more dealing with various doctors over my lifetime. I've experienced all of the above since I was diagnosed with cancer. I have a lot of ex doctors. Once the seed of doubt is in your mind it rarely goes away so it's best at that point to do some research on new doctors and try to find one that will be a better fit for you and your needs.

@rosevardengal

I have had the last 2 appointments where I am there for 1 1/2 or 2 hours and see the doctor at the end.

Plus, they keep on canceling my physical which is now scheduled for March 2028.

Your comment about if one gets that feeling of discontent, it rarely goes away is so true!

I agree with these folks. First, questioning. Your gut tells you something is "off". Not allowing or dismissing any questions you have. I wrestled with this decision. Finally, saw a second oncologist. Glad I did. You CAN have 2 oncologist. He has me continuing with my 1st for continuity. I understand that. He will monitor and actually see me more often, every 2-3 months. Original doc sees me every 6 months. At 82 yo I needed someone who treated adult senior cancer patients. So glad I got more help. Good luck. You know your body better than they. Your gut and heart know.

If you're rushed and dismissed, poor communication. Difficult to get an appointment, lack of care coordination and disrespect for your time. If you're not the most important person in the room. These are signs to switch to a new doctor. 😊🙏🌹

@A MyBCTeam Member .... it sounds like they have too many patients and not enough help. It is unacceptable to be at what I assume should be a 15-20 minute appointment and have to wait up to 2 hours to finally see the doctor. It's even more unacceptable to reschedule your physical multiple times and make you wait for at least 4 months. I'm guessing if they hadn't rescheduled the original physical you would probably be due for the next one around March 2028.

At a bare minimum you need a backup doctor if you like the current one. If you are done with the unacceptable wait times for everything with your current doctor along with any other issues then it's time find a new one and move on.
