It's really common for people on anastrozole to experience bone density loss, since the medication significantly lowers estrogen levels β€” and estrogen plays a key role in keeping bones strong. So those DEXA scan results, while concerning, are not unusual.

Prolia (denosumab) is one of the bone-strengthening medications that doctors often prescribe in this situation. Some side effects that have been reported include:

- Joint or muscle pain
- Back pain
- High cholesterol
- Increased risk of infections
- Low calcium levels
- In rare cases, jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis of the jaw)
- Unusual thigh bone fractures with long-term use Many MyBCTeam members have navigated similar concerns about bone health while on aromatase inhibitors like anastrozole. It's worth having a detailed conversation with your oncologist or a bone specialist about the risks and benefits of Prolia specifically for your situation.

In the meantime, your doctor may also recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements alongside any bone-strengthening treatment to help support bone health.

There are PRs and cons taking the bone density drugs.
Two women on here got jaw necrosis with the bone density drugs.

You need to read all the literature and balance what is right for you.

The methods for increasing bone density without bone density drugs are weight bearing exercises, lifting small weights, making sure that you have a high vitamin D level while taking vitamins D, K and magnesium to build bones. Eat calcium rich foods.
