What is iron bra syndrome, and how can it be managed?
Iron bra syndrome, also known as postmastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS), is a condition where you feel persistent chest tightness after breast cancer surgery. It can feel like pressure, tightness, or even like barbed wire around your chest — not exactly a spa day experience!
It can occur after surgeries like:
- Lumpectomy
- Mastectomy
- Breast reconstruction
- Axillary lymph node dissection Here are some ways to help manage it:
1. Physical therapy — A therapist experienced with post-breast cancer surgery can guide you through exercises to reduce tightness and improve range of motion.
2. Stretching — Daily stretching of the chest, arms, and back can help loosen tight muscles and scar tissue.
3. Strengthening exercises — Light weightlifting (with your surgeon's approval) can help rebuild chest muscles.
4. Swimming — A low-impact, full-body workout that can ease discomfort. Only once incisions are fully healed and your surgeon approves.
5. Comfortable clothing — Avoid underwire bras, tight sports bras, or shelf bras. Bralettes or soft tank tops are often more comfortable. Always check with your healthcare team before starting any new exercise or treatment routine. And contact your doctor right away if you experience fever, worsening swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
