When breast cancer spreads to the sternum (a bone), this is considered metastasis — meaning cancer has traveled beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to a distant part of the body. This would generally be classified as stage 4, or metastatic breast cancer. That said, only your oncologist can officially confirm your stage after reviewing all your test results. They'll likely consider:
- Where the cancer has spread
- Hormone receptor status (ER/PR)
- HER2 status
- Tumor grade
These factors all shape what treatment options are available to you. The good news is that stage 4 breast cancer treatment has improved significantly. Many people are now able to manage it more like a chronic condition, with more treatment options available than ever before.
Please do speak openly with your oncology team about your staging and next steps — you deserve clear answers and a plan that's right for you. 💙
