The first time I had chemo I bleached my hair when it was about an inch long. Even though I used good shampoo and conditioner, the hair was too fine and baby like and the bleach fried it. The second time I had chemo I colored my hair when it was about an inch long. This time I used a color that didn't have any bleach, along with a good shampoo and conditioner. I've colored it 4 times now since late September and it is soft, healthy, and in good shape.

Can you dye your hair after breast cancer treatment?

Yes, you can dye your hair after breast cancer treatment, but timing and caution are important. After chemotherapy, your scalp becomes sensitive and your new hair will be fragile, so it's best to wait until your hair feels strong again.

Most recommendations suggest waiting at least six months after chemotherapy before using permanent or semipermanent hair dyes. Hair typically starts growing back three to six months after chemo ends.

When you're ready to color your hair, consider these tips:

- Start with gentler options like ammonia-free dyes or natural rinses
- Do a patch test behind your ear before applying any new product
- Work with a stylist familiar with post-chemo hair
- Be gentle with your new hair growth and avoid harsh chemicals initially

Your scalp may be more sensitive to irritation after treatment, so watch for any reactions. Some MyBCTeam members have successfully used products like Clairol Natural Instincts or Herbatint, while others prefer salon treatments with milder formulas.

Always check with your oncologist before dyeing your hair, especially if you're still on maintenance medications, as some treatments can affect how your hair reacts to dye.
