I have just started Exemestane and Verzenio (abemaciclib). I am not feeling great. I am feeling nauseous, joint pain, and gums and palate (the top of my mouth) are sore, making it hard to eat.
Anyone else with these symptoms? Any solutions to reduce these symptoms?

Nausea is a common side effect of all AIs and CDK inhibitors. You may want to ask your doctor for a nausea medication like Zofran aka Ondansetron. This is the nausea medication my doctors prescribe for me during chemo, radiation, and for nausea in general.

Joint pain is another common side effect of AIs and CDK inhibitors. You should check with your doctor and see what they recommend you take to ease the joint pain.

Mouth and throat pain is a side effect of all CDK inhibitors and also Exemestane so check with your doctor about any suggestions they have for this as well.

Good luck ❤️

What symptoms are common when starting Exemestane and Verzenio, and how can they be managed?

You're definitely not alone in experiencing these side effects. Nausea, joint pain, and mouth soreness are all recognized side effects of these medications, and many MyBCTeam members have dealt with similar challenges.

For Nausea:
Your doctor can prescribe anti-nausea medications like Zofran (ondansetron) that can be very effective. A MyBCTeam member shared they took Zofran and never threw up despite significant nausea.

You can also try:
* Drinking plenty of clear liquids
* Eating smaller meals more frequently
* Avoiding spicy, high-fat foods, dairy, alcohol, and caffeine
* Sipping herbal teas like peppermint, ginger, or chamomile
* Taking probiotics

For Joint Pain:
Joint pain is a common side effect of aromatase inhibitors like Exemestane. Research shows that routine exercise can significantly reduce this pain. One member who experienced pain and stiffness from similar medication walked 1.5 miles every evening and became pain-free after six months.

For Mouth Soreness:
Good oral hygiene is essential. Try brushing your teeth frequently, using mouthwash throughout the day, and carrying mints or sugar-free gum. If the soreness makes eating difficult, stick to softer foods that are easier to tolerate.

Make sure to talk with your doctor about these symptoms, especially if they're affecting your ability to eat or maintain your quality of life. They may adjust dosages or provide additional medications to help manage these side effects.
