Herceptin (trastuzumab) is a widely used chemotherapy drug that has been life-saving for many people with HER2-positive breast cancer. Since its FDA approval in 1998, it has significantly improved outcomes for patients, helping many reach remission and live longer, healthier lives.

However, it's important to be aware of potential side effects and monitoring requirements. Common side effects reported by MyBCTeam members include:
• Numbness throughout the body
• Aching and weakness
• Unusual sensations
• Fatigue

One of the most important things to know is that Herceptin can affect heart function. Your healthcare team will need to monitor your heart regularly during treatment. In some cases, heart medications can be prescribed to help manage these effects, and lifestyle adjustments like diet and exercise may help reduce risks. While these side effects may sound concerning, many patients find the benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor will carefully monitor you throughout treatment and can adjust your care plan if needed. They'll work with you to make informed decisions about your treatment based on your individual situation.

When you are on herceptin you are on it for a year. Also you do have to have echo cardiograms until you are finished with the herceptin. That was my schedule while I was on it. It was given to me by iv only. I was on taxol and that at the same time. Of course one infusion of taxol and next came the herceptin for 3 months once a week. So the first three months on herceptin counted towards my year of it.

Hello Jan.

I had Herceptin, along with Perjeta and Paclitaxel chemo drugs, every three weeks for 6 sessions. I had reactions every week that included some nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. I completed that neoadjuvant cycle in May and had my lumpectomy in June. I am happy to say it was negative; the biopsy did not show any trace of remaining cancer cells. I started my adjuvant treatments (infusions every 3 weeks) with Herceptin and Perjeta, but no more chemo! I have had 3 treatments so far (will do 8 more), with no side effects at all. As Kathleen said, you should also get periodic echocardiograms. My oncologist orders one for me to get every 3 months. I also started radiation treatments. I completed 2 weeks and have 3 to go. So far, no problems with that, although the research indicates a cumulative effect that may cause fatigue.

Of course, everyone has different experiences. Do your research and talk to your doctors so you are prepared. Have meds and supplements handy, should you need them, especially for nausea and diarrhea.

Take care. Let us know how it goes.

Jan, I am getting my Herceptin (Kanjinti a Herceptin bio similar) every three weeks with my Paclitaxel chemo med. I have had 3 already. I can't really pinpoint a real big difference between infusions with or without it. Maybe stronger pain days or a little more tired and weaker. It was important for me to have a baseline echo cardiogram before beginning my treatment as herceptin may cause heart issues. I hope this helps a little. It is something more to research! Also, are you getting it as an infusion or a shot in your thigh? Sending positve thoughts and prayers your way! 🙏❤️🥰
