Testing After Breast Cancer Treatment

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had a partial mastectomy, 4 rounds of chemo and currently going through radiation (#12 tonight).. and will be put on Anastrasole in May. My Oncologist told me that they won't do any testing after completion of radiation to determine if there is no evidence of cancer...I will just be monitored every 3 months for 2 years. I find that pill hard to swallow! Has anyone had testing after breast cancer treatment to determine where you are in your journey? If cancer is in remission or eradicated… read more

I had a mastectomy & right after the surgeon said I was cancer free I also saw the oncologist every 3 months & had blood work done I believe the blood work can show possible cancer I just had a diagnostic mammogram very thorough & don’t have to go back for another year cancer free for two years one of the blood test was a cancer antigen hope this helps

I had a lumpectomy end of Oct 2022. Completed radiation end of Jan 2023. They have to wait 6 months after radiation to do mammograms. I get the 3D. Our Windsong Radiology in Buffalo makes sure we get the MRI. That detects a lot. Found this surprising.
They did mine after the biopsy to see if there were any other suspicious areas. If you don't have a good feeling about your oncologist call your insurance and get another one. This is scary stuff.

Hi Melana, I too questioned this. In two years they decrease your appointments also. I was told you had a team. Your breast cancer surgeon orders your mammograms and other testing. Your oncologist does do blood work that I thought was a form of detecting?? And my Radiologist after 2 years said I graduated, and hopefully will never need to see them again. I do want to note that my bc surgeon was old school. I am very dense for mammograms seeing… in fact I had bilateral bc that my mammograms didn’t pick up.. so I heard of a young new bc doctor being very thorough and patient and kind. I made an appointment. She is a Tiger! She actually said I will be getting a breast MRI, then in six months a three d diagnostic mammogram. It has been three years for me in February. She said she will see I get this. Maybe ask your oncologist what all kinds of blood work they do? My oncologist if I mention any thing I feel is not quite feeling right, he orders the appropriate scan/test for that area. You have to be your own advocate unfortunately sometimes. My first bc surgeon was very mean about doing a MRI .. the BC Doctor has to contact your insurance company and fight for you. Just like my oncologist had to fight for a lot of MRI’s when my BC Doctor did biopsy.. all my request for additional MRI’s ( bone MRI plus others my oncologist got them approved. It’s a harder fight sometimes with an complacent health care provider. Find another doctor if you feel they are not caring a being thorough. I was glad I did. Sorry this is so long. Prayers sent and peace of mind, healing and strength. ❤️👍🙏🏻
