I had nipple sparing bilateral mastectomies with expander reconstruction. Despite all the problems I had with expanders (folding, flipping & leakage), my Surgeon insisted on replacing these with permanent implants. I'm really unhappy with the results - the new implants used are too big. The radiated breast has already had one infection and is mismatched to the other larger (unradiated) breast.
I am now considering removal of implants. I have been told I would have 2 bags of baggy skin… read more
I went flat immediately with my BMX last year and love! I wear prosthetics, light weight ones. I think as a conductor and musician you would be fine with them. I played flute, not that that is the same as what you do. Plus, you can choose your perfect size.
@A MyBCTeam Member I honestly think in my opinion being comfortable and feeling good is more important than bumps under your shirt. There are so many prosthetics to choose from. I’m actually watching botched right now. They are removing people implants that were messed up. I can barely watch 🤮. But honestly like my regular physician says everything depends on the Doctor. I didn’t even know till I came on this site that women have everything removed anymore and skin re stretched. That’s just crazy to me. My doctors father ‘pioneered’ the skin and nipple sparing technique and taught his son which is my dr. Drs travel from all over the country to watch him operate. I think you should google ‘after mastectomy pictures’ Decide if you would be ok. If not find a dr with a lot of experience with after mastectomy implants. It’s not the same as regular implants. And I don’t believe every plastic surgeon who does them knows what they are doing.
@TrishaQuails I don’t know I think they are being cautious. I really didn’t feel much of anything. I couldn’t figure out why my thighs were sore on the way home and it was because he did a little extra lipo. He took from my stomach to put fat around the implant and then did a little extra for me. . Other than slight soreness where the lipo was I felt nothing. My best friend since 10th grade had her after mastectomy implants redone 3 times to go bigger. She kept telling me the surgery was nothing like I was imagining it was going to be and she was right. I can’t imagine needing 2 weeks off from work. I’m not sure but I don’t think I even laid down when I got home. I know the next night we went out with friends and they thought it was so funny I was out after getting my boobs the days before. They gave me oxycodine to take if I had pain. I never took one. I didn’t even need tylonal. .
@A MyBCTeam Member I am pretty much flat except for how concave I am and the fact that my rib bones stick out. I have a whole basket of different weight prosthetics. I love my Handful sports bras. The company designs bras for mastectomy patients and give you a 30% off forever and free inserts with each bra. I also use the inserts in other camisoles and bras. Quite frankly I go flat 98% of the time. If I am dressing up for. Holiday party I might try a dress with and without inserts to see what works best. It did not take me long to get comfortable with my flat body. With implants I always felt something alien in my body.
I had my implants removed in April of 2018. I had constant problems with them especially on the radiated side. When I developed capsular contracture one side stayed high and tight and the other side dropped and was saggy. My PS blamed it on my age. You would have thought he should have warned me about that before I agreed to put them in. I had my bmx first before chemo and radiation. So a PS had no idea what radiation would do to my skin. I also think PS ‘s fail to tell us about the risks. I had 22 months of excruciating pain because of expanders and implants. I had constant inflammation in my chest and ribs. The damage done was permanent. I had reconstruction 15 days after my TNBC dx. My intitial feeling was to go flat but I let my breast surgeon talk me out of it. Implants are bags filled with toxic chemicals that are placed in your body when your immune system is at its weakest. My advise is to educate yourself about all the issues with implants. Don’t let any doctor tell you the way you look should be more important than your health
