What To Do When Your Doctor Prescribes A Medication And Your Insurance Company Denies You Access To That Particular Drug?

The insurance company, CVS Caremark said that people over 65 are not able to take this particular sleeping tablet because we are forgetful, we might fall and we are not able to handle the many side effects. I and my doctor have explained, I am fully functioning and except for the cancer I'm in better physical condition than most of the cancer centers' many nurses. I feel badly that I am now lumped into an age group and not having "me", personally considered. I am an individual and deserve to be… read more

Thank you for the suggestion, I had tried that approach, my doctor is working on the appeal. I guess my concern is more for other people than myself. I am doing fine but what about people who are in pain and have no one to advocate for them? I spent over a week working with Medicare to alert them to a double billing situation and the person I spoke to didn't even care and actually said that I couldn't prove that I didn't receive my medications. (I did prove it by asking for the routing number which the insurance company didn't have) The point is that people who are already under stress are being stressed even more.

Hi, when I had a conversation with my doctor and explained to them that my insurance would not approve a certain medications right away. The person at the insurance company said tell your doctor to put that the medications are medically necessary for me to take and from then on any medications that I needed was approved by the insurance company. The insurance company sent me a letter of the medication that was approved by them and for how long it was approved for but it is approved each time. Otherwise I would have issues with getting my medications.

What med did they deny? I had SilverScript /CVS deny the Zofran during chemo but my pharmacist found a coupon and fills it anyway off of insurance. I am 67 and I take Gabapentin, which does make you groggy but so do my BP meds. My elderly mom was on all sorts of meds that made her forget fall. She had severe Osteoperosis and did fall from all the opiate pain meds they had her on.
