Cataracts After Chemo

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Avon Lake, OH

I had my annual Opthamologist visit today to check my Retinopathy. My Retinopathy has resolved itself but my Cataracts have gotten a lot worse. My doctor feels the chemo and steroids accentuated the growth. He wants me to have surgery but wants me to wit until my immune system is healthier. I am almost 4 months post chemo and 1 month post Radiation. Have others had the same problem with cataracts?

My cataract grew very fast during chemo. One eye was totally useless! I finished chemo in Oct 2016 and had cataract surgery in March. Other eye will be done this fall. I think the steroids make them grow faster than normal.

I had my eye appointment back in end of April. I had to have my prescription bi focals strengthened in left eye. My left eye has always been weak even since my childhood. I had radiation, not chemo and I just attribute it to getting older and wiser. LOL

He also explained how the chemo dries everything in your body out and then your tear ducts have to overproduce tears to compensate. He feels I need the surgery soon but he wants me to wait until my immune system is at 100%. I also have to finish reconstruction in the next 3-6 months, so I wonder if that will delay cataract surgery. Since chemo I also think I have developed Fibeomyalgia. I always have tenderness in my joints, now. I try to ignore it and try to move around but it is difficult sometime,

I had to have new lenses the last two years, my eyes are worse then they were. For 10 years they never changed. I know that chemo does a lot of brutal things to us. My finger nails are a mess.
