I think I can clear up the question. As a dental hygienist for 50 yrs., I know that Xgeva, Zometa, Prolia, and any of the drugs that prevent osteoporosis can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. It is known as dead jaw because the bone dies. It is painful and there is no cure. Your can lose the teeth in that area. I have 2 dental implants so I was concerned but the incidence is 8%. My orthopedic surgeon who did my hip replacement told me to just be on Xgeva for 2 yrs and there shouldn't be a problem. But it is helping to keep my bone mets stable so my onco put me on it every 2 months now. I'm just praying that I won't be in the 8%! I have no side effects from it. I hope that this info helps. I think having Xgeva is worth the risk because bone mets can be very painful and I'm not having any pain right now.

I am on Zometa now and for quite awhile I had leg pain. Not as bad now. I asked my onco about the difference between Xgeva and Zometa. She said the center she is at elected to use the Zometa which is less expensive for their patients. Effects are the same. My luck I will be one of the 8% that gets the jaw problem!

I did some reading, and yes a clearance from dentist is often requested.

@A MyBCTeam Member - Instead of Zometa, I get Xgeva. Same thing but newer and supposedly better than Zometa. It's just an injection once every 28 days - in and out and your done. I have no side effects at all from it.
