Hello Everyone! I am a year out from Chemo and Radiation after having Stage IIIA Breast Cancer. I am preparing for Reconstruction surgery in June. I am having DIEP flap reconstruction after having a double mastectomy. I don't see many Before and After Pictures for the DIEP Flap surgery on the internet reconstructing a after a double mastectomy as well as recovery information after this procedure. I had this and the surgery was long ( for my family not me) and 4 days in the hospital.....hardest part was the stomach issues and standing up straight, which came with time.....drains were annoying, but short lived in the long run. I am very happy with the results. I worried that I would be upset when looking in the mirror, but that is all good. I don;t mind the stomach scar. It's there, but I don't dress in a way that afffects it........I would so choose this as opposed to implants and artificial parts being put into me with the chance of it not "taking" and down the road having to do a re do....this is lengthy, but done for the long haul
Hi, I'm having a DIEP in Oct. If you haven't found the DIEP support group on Facebook, look for it. You will learn and see way more that you want. Keep in mind that people that have issues or questions are most likely to post. There are also success stories. It is very supportive. Good luck!
I am 10 weeks post opt Delayed Diep.. Had chemo, mastectomy with expanders and then 28 rounds of radiation. If you send me your private email I am willing to send you some pictures.
Because of a mistake on my part I am still recovering from an open wound to one Breast. I will say despite that this surgery is very tough recovery and yes there is a risk for complications. My surgery was 11 hours and 5 days in the hospital. I am extremely happy with the choice I made. This surgery usually is not a one shot and your done type surgery. Once my wound heals I will be going under again to do some lipo, lifting and filling. Even with everything not done yet and my open wound I'm so very happy with the results.Recovering from the tummy tightness is the worse part for me as well as yes the back pain is no fun. Also make sure your surgeon is a MicroSurgeon. There is a group on facebook that gives lots of real pictures and experiences. Look up DIEP and ask to join the group.
I too have been stressing about this and still have aways to go 4 rounds chemo left 8 wks. Thank you for the info. And encouragement
