I just got my pathogy report following my BMX..I was originally diagnosed IDC stage IA, grade II, ER, PR and HER2 positive with no node involvement. Now it turns out there was a second area found (undetected by multiple mammos which is scary) which has differnt features. Specifically it is tubule, grade I and less aggressive. @A MyBCTeam Member I was very lucky and thank God thatmy surgeon insisted on these tests as well as putting a port in before starting Chemo. I know that not everyone has doctors who feel the necessity to be as sure as possible before following up with treatment. I feel very fortunate in a big way.
I too was diagnosed with two different types of cancer in one breast. I opted for a bilateral mastectomy even though my doctor only recommended one be removed. Which I was glad because there was cancer in my other breast as well. No chemo and no radiation - only tamoxifen. My oncotype score was 23 and my oncologist said there is no data to support that chemo would reduce reoccurrence. As of now I am cancer free.
An oncotype test needs to be done on the tumors to determine the need for chemo or not.
@A MyBCTeam Member, this is insane, how MRIs are not picking up these BC. I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with DCIS and her breast surgeon refused to do an MRI or sentinel node during her Mastectomy, and her pathology came back that she also had IDC and LCIS. Now she's freaked not knowing if there was lymph node involvement. I had told her repeatedly that she needed to insist on the MRI and Sentinel node, but her surgeon convinced her it wasn't necessary. All I can say is we need to be our own advocate loud and clear!
I also had 2 different cancers in the same breast. One tumor was ER/PR negative Her2+ and the other was triple negative. Proximity was close enough that they were able to do lumpectomy and get both in one surgery. No lymph node involvement and clear margins. However, the triple negative tumor did not show up on any of the tests except the breast MRI my doctor ordered.
