I opted for single mastectomy with implant but kept my natural breast. It's been 5 1/2 years and I'm still in remission after chemo! Losing a breast IS a big deal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise - I knew I could always change my mind on the other breast but I'm glad I kept it. I look totally normal in clothes or swim suit. When you lose your breast you lose the nipple as well as all sensation or feeling in that side. Most people don't address this loss. But it's an important aspect to consider.

@A MyBCTeam Member: no, I am stage 4 with spread to my bones. I will probably be starting chemo again within the next month to six weeks.
I was given the option in 2008 when I was first diagnosed. I chose to have a lumpectomy and radiation. Who wouldn't want an easier recovery time, right? Well, my breast cancer came back in 2013 and I had a BMX with tissue expanders. The reconstruction failed due to the previous radiation. I was not told about the tissue damage radiation could cause and the potential for non-healing if I needed breast surgery in the future. Granted, nobody knew my cancer would return; however I wish I had been told everything so I could have made a more educated decision about my first surgery. I would have gladly had the BMX with reconstruction the first time.
