Right after I had my BMX, my family moved from CT to AZ. My Dr. In CT was going to do the exchange by going in through my original incision, which is across the middle of my breast. The Dr. In AZ plans to make an incision under my breast for the exchange. I'm just wondering which way is more common or preferred?
My surgeon is going to remove my tissue expanders and place the silicone implants under the breast also. Not using original incision. His rational was because after radiation the original scar will have a difficult time healing.
I had that done. But I'm not very happy with the way it turned out. Both sides have two very lumpy scars on them, and my nipples point outward with rippling on the top. I would research some other ways first. I hope it turns out great for you.
I ended up going to a different surgeon who went back through my original incisions. He told me a lot of doctors make the reconstructive incision under the breast because it is easier. I'm not sure if that is true, but for me, it worked our better to go back through the original incision. I had kind of a lumpy scar and the Dr. was able to get rid of most of the scar tissue and I ended up with a much cleaner incision line with less scar tissue. Every Dr. is diffetent though so I think it's best to do whatever your Dr. is most comfortable with.
Mine used the original incision. I think at least in part because I had a lot of scar tissue due to many surgeries trying to get all the cancer before ultimately having a mastectomy.
My advice is to point blank ask your surgeon. Perhaps there is a good medical reason or perhaps that's their normal way of doing it. I'm 6weeks post surgery for the exchange.
Hugs
@ Kane, I didn't have radiation, but my PS basically said the same thing. She said, they want the original incision to continue to heal because they will eventually have to cut through it again when they make the nipple. She said she was going to make a small incision under my breasts for the implants. Thanks! It's helpful to know other Dr.s do it this way too.
